See into your veneer stacks like never before
Increased Dryer Productivity
The most important measure for any new technology is the bottom-line impact. While all inventory management systems will add operational improvements, it is often challenging to quantify the incremental productivity increases and derive a concrete dollar value for ROI (return on investment) analysis.
On the surface, the LightMARK™ system may appear to be little more than a simple inventory management tool. However, the real opportunity for bottom-line impact comes from increased dryer productivity. By harnessing stack data generated by the LightSORT™ and integrating this into your drying process, you can gain greater control of the drying process, and realize the productivity impacts of this increased level of control. Some of the opportunities are outlined here, but these are not the only possible scenarios. You may find other ways to put the LightSORT™ information to work to optimize your green-end production.
Perhaps the most immediate way to increase dryer productivity can be realized through simple "load matching". Stacks with identical or similar moisture content are run through the dryer together.
Because the moisture content remains relatively homogenous across the length and width of the dryer, controller tracking is steady and consistent. The potential for controller overshoot and oscillation is drastically reduced. Veneer quality is improved with less redry and more in-target MC (moisture content) veneer.
Dryer Profiling or "Fingerprinting"
Another way to maximize dryer productivity is through Dryer Profiling. Here, a heating profile or "fingerprint" is compiled for each dryer. Wetter stacks are directed to the hotter regions of the dryer, and drier stacks are loaded for the cooler regions.
In the example depicted on the left, the dryer runs hotter on the left side than on the right side. In order to maximize dryer productivity, medium sap loads are sent down the center and right sides of the dryer, and the wetter sap loads are sent through the hotter left side. By matching the loads to the specific characteristics or "fingerprint" of the dryer, controller tracking is improved with less overdry and refeed.
LightMARK™ stack labels are more than just visual inventory aids. The barcodes also open the door to a range of new dryer control opportunities. Automated dryer recipe selection based on the specific moisture content for each stack promises tighter recipe control while at the same time reducing the potential for operator errors. And because each barcode is linked to detailed LightSORTTM stack data, sophisticated sheet-by-sheet analysis could be used to drive state-of-the-art feed-forward controllers -- an approach never before implemented in the veneer production industry.
Dryer Analysis and Tuning Tool
Dryer troubleshooting can be a tough, time-consuming process. One of the main reasons for this has to be the large number of parameters involved. The LightMARK™ system helps eliminate some of the "unknowns" by helping you track every sheet of every load that is processed by your dryer. By comparing the input sheet details to the dryer output data, you can spot trouble areas, identify controller and tuning issues, and even fine-tune your sort parameters to better optimize dryer productivity. LightMARK™ adds to the rich LightSORT™ toolbox to enable you to take control of your green veneer process -- from peel to dry.
